Verizon Wireless customers nationwide experienced a major service disruption Wednesday morning, as a widespread network outage forced tens of thousands of phones into SOS mode and left users unable to place calls, send text messages, or access mobile data.
The outage began shortly after 9 a.m. EST and quickly intensified. Outage-tracking platform Downdetector recorded more than 113,000 reports at its peak, with complaints flooding in from across the country. Customers in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, and Washington, DC reported complete signal loss, failed calls, and nonfunctional data services.
Verizon confirmed the outage in a brief statement, acknowledging that some customers were affected and that technical teams were working to restore service.
“We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers,” a Verizon spokesperson said. “Our engineers are actively working to identify and resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We understand how critical reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.”
